Dorchester Two’s GATE Summer Reading List Summer 2013
Reading is an essential skill for all academic work, and the more students read, the better readers they become! Wide recreational reading can extend vocabulary, increase comprehension, and stimulate higher order thinking. We want the best learning experiences for our children in Dorchester Two!
Every student participating in Dorchester Two’s Gifted & Talented Education (GATE) program has been asked to read the following novels this summer:
- Rising 4th grade GATE students – Choice of one of the following:
- The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare
- Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George
- Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell
- Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks
- Rising 5th grade GATE students – Shades of Gray by Carolyn Reeder
- Rising 6th grade GATE students – Savvy by Ingrid Law
- Rising 7th grade GATE students – The Giver by Lois Lowry
- Rising 8th grade Honors/CP English I students – Animal Farm by George Orwell
- Rising 8th grade Advanced/GATE Literature – Nothing by the Truth by Avi
These novels are aligned with the concepts and themes addressed throughout the year in the GATE ELA classes; therefore students will have multiple opportunities to showcase and connect their new learning with their already present knowledge.
Thank you for your assistance in providing books for our students and assisting us in encouraging a life-long love of reading! Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Anita Ruff at 843-821-3960. Have a great summer!

Summer Reading List
One key to students’ reading success is making their reading experiences entertaining, relaxing, and enjoyable. Allowing children to choose their own reading materials based on their reading interests is one way to ensure academic success.
Dorchester School District Two feels it is imperative that we provide our students with as many opportunities as possible to grow academically. Reading for understanding and appreciation is a skill that translates effectively into every academic area. The purpose of the summer reading program is to provide students with the opportunity to select works which are of literary merit from lists developed by their language arts teachers at the middle school level. The middle school ELA teachers and media specialists have made every effort to choose titles that are both enjoyable and worthwhile. We hope to encourage reading for pleasure as well as reading for enlightenment, and we want to emphasize that the following summer reading list should be thought of as a starting point for conscientious students as they prepare to enter school in the fall.
Lexile ranges (www.lexile.com) have recently been realigned to match the Common Core State Standards' text complexity grade bands. The new Lexile band for grades 6-8 is 955L-1155L. Lexiles are provided below to assist in book selection, and each grade level offers titles with a variety of Lexile levels to match varying student needs.
Although participation is not required, it is strongly recommended that rising sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students take part in the Summer Reading Program for Dorchester School District Two. Please check with your child's middle school for any summer reading that may be required.
